My Skincare and Makeup Swaps and Faves [2022]
It has been over two years since I shared my 10 Current Favorite Personal Care Products so I guess a new skincare post is a bit overdue. Unfortunately, in 2020, I fell back into old habits due to restrictions and availability. While working for a JDV by Hyatt, I started learning more about the company’s stand on sustainability and our hotel was big when it comes to the Ag Community. It made me re-focused on pursuing how I can make a small change even with the current challenges. I started swapping my skincare and makeup back to low-tox and sustainable products as I finished each item and here’s what I am currently using — the good & the bad.
Shampoo & Conditioner
I am currently using Ouai Thick Shampoo and Conditioner but I still use and am still a big fan of Lush. I still use the Honey I Washed My Hair Shampoo Bar but have changed my conditioner to the naked version of American Cream!
Then: Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner
Body Soap & Lotion
I love Lush’s Sleepy Soap but not really inlove because of how fast it dissolves. This is the same issue I had with Karma Naked Soap so I am trying to find ways to make it last longer by dividing it and using small pieces at a time. I match this with their Sleep Massage Bar!
Then: Lush Good Karma Shower Gel Plastic Bottle)/ Karma Kream
Perfume & Fragrance
I enjoy a good scent. Finding perfume is one of my struggles when I started this journey, so Chanel was one of my exceptions. Chanel No 5 L’eau and Coco Mademoiselle were my favorites, so when I found Dossier, I was so ecstatic! I typically never buy dupes as I believe it is disrespectful to the creators and designers, as well as I believe in paying for quality, service, &/or experience. What I did like about Dossier is its clean ingredients and utilizing recycled materials. Aside from being vegan, it is also cruelty-free! Dossier provide “blends inspired by brand fragrances, upholding the same high quality standards…”. I currently have Woody Oak moss (inspired by Coco Mademoiselle), Woody Hyacinth (inspired by Chance), Woody Sage (Inspired by Jo Malone’s Wood Sage & Sea Salt), and Floral Ylang Ylang (Inspired by Chanel’s Gabrielle).
Then: Chanel No 5 L’eau and Coco Mademoiselle
Foundation & Concealer
Switching makeup to low-tox and sustainable was difficult for me. I mean, finding the right foundation and concealer for your skin type and color match is already a struggle, imagine finding something that is not only good for you but for the environment. I have heard about Kjaer Weis for a few years but I was not really thrilled that I can’t “try” their items before purchasing. I did bite the bullet when I decided to stop purchasing Chanel products earlier this year. I currently use Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation in Subtlety and ditched the whole concealer thing — for now, at least. Another good option is Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint but note that this is not best suitable for combination-to-oily skin.
Then: Chanel Ultra Le Teint Velvet B30, Dior Forever Skin Correct 2WO
Blush
If I have to choose between foundation, concealer, blush, or bronzer, you can bet that I would choose blush. I love a peachy orange blush for a sun-kissed and natural look so I do prefer cream blush or tints. My fave is the Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Joyful and still use the ILIA Multi-stick in Dreamer!
Then: Rare Beauty Cream Blush, Dior Rouge Blush
Lipstick & Lip Tint
You would think that we would pay more attention to what we put on our lips. After all, we can ingest this but do you know that many lipsticks use synthetic dyes and petroleum-based chemicals? Lead and other heavy metals have also been found in some lipstick. This is why being conscious on what we put in our lips and skin is extremely important. I am a Matte Lipstick kind of gal but matte tends to be super dry so I typically use tinted lip balm as well. My faves are Kjaer Weis Matte Naturally Liquid Lipstick in Lavish, Kjaer Weis Nude Naturally Lipstick in Sincere, and ILIA Balmy Gloss Tinted Lip Oil in Saint.
Then: Dior Addict Lip Tint Natural Rosewood & Lip Glow 001 Pink
Eye Shadows
This is where I always splurge before. I don’t know how many palettes I needed but one great thing about going low-waste is you learn to only purchase what you need! This ILIA Necessary Eyeshadow is really all you need.
Then: Urban Decay Naked 3 Mini
Mascara
Mascara is essential for someone like me as my lashes are quite short. I used to get a lash extension until one day, my eyes got irritated, and found out I may be allergic! Like after almost two years, my eyes said enough from all those chemicals. My eyes get irritated fast so clean mascara is a must! After trying mascara after mascara, I found Kjaer Weis Im-Possible to work best for my need!
Then: Lancome Idole Lash & Tarte Camera, Lights, Lashes
Unfortunately, “clean beauty” and “cruelty-free” has been just another marketing tactic for some brands, so I highly suggest doing your research and getting familiar with the ingredients. I am still learning this and am learning every day so if you have any suggestions or recommendations, please share them in the comment section so others and I can also learn from you!
