5 Tips on Starting a Zero-Waste Lifestyle

Sharing 5 tips on starting a zero-waste lifestyle!

Did you know that according to United States Environmental Protection (EPA), an average person produces roughly 4.5 pounds of trash per day? This means that a family of four produces about 2 gallons of trash per day.

The word “Zero-Waste” can be quite intimidating to those who are just starting their sustainable journey but it doesn’t need to be. Zero-waste simply means minimizing waste and reducing overall footprint in order to have a low impact in our planet. This can be accomplished by being conscious and striving to eliminate that 4.5 lbs of trash per day that is being sent to landfill everyday. Going zero-waste doesn’t mean giving up EVERYTHING you love to live.

Whatever may be your reasoning behind your decision to live a sustainable lifestyle, here are 5 tips for getting started with zero-waste living and minimizing your waste!

  1. Start small - start with a single space.

New habits and changing every room in the house can be overwhelming. Starting with a single space would allow you to get used to these small changes and new habits you are creating. I started in the bathroom by changing my toothbrush to a wooden brush, my shampoo and conditioner to bars instead of plastic bottles, body soap, and facial cleanser!

  2. Use and finish your products or items before purchasing new ones

When I started my clean living and low-waste journey, I wanted to change everything! I wanted it for both aesthetics and to feel I have achieved the “new” lifestyle but some of my products were still halfway full or almost brand new — throwing them defeats the purpose and puts more unnecessary trash in our landfill. Changing everything all at once is not necessary.

  3. Learn how you can utilize what you already have to avoid waste

I am so guilty of this that I don’t even want to add this but I think it may be helpful.  I went crazy on Amazon to purchase new spice jars because ① I will be purchasing spices in bulk, ② wooden lids scream sustainable as there will be no plastic, and ③ my OCD says, I need uniformity! Weeks later, I prefer those simple organic spice jars that I have had and wish I use those instead…

  4. Ditch single-use plastics

This is the easiest way to start! If there is ONE way I would recommend that you change, it would be ditching that plastic straw, plastic bags, and a plastic bottle of water!

  5. Be Kind To Yourself. Celebrate small successes and achievements

It can be very easy to get discouraged as we make little mistakes such as purchasing a coffee at a coffee shop and they used a plastic cup that you have to dispose of or having to use a plastic utensil that your take-out provided.  Celebrating small successes can help you stay motivated.  Every little change counts!
